Barbara Layne and three of her Research assistants visited the Swedish School of Textiles for a five days hands on workshop. The workshop goal has been to blend the fields of art and technology by weaving electronic components into flexible fabrics. The workshop included: An introduction to basic electronics and designing simple circuits. The development of soft circuitry by weaving and sewing conductive threads into fabrics (using hand looms). The creation of light-emitting fabrics with LEDs. A discussion and demonstration on microcontrollers and the use of sensing devices to trigger interactive responses.
Workshop participants have been designing and creating several small woven cloth sample pieces incorporating LEDs that can be worn on the body, hung on the wall, or used in any fabric with functional, decorative, or artistic applications. One of the samples is able to interact with a handwoven Interactive Wall Hanging that features an LED array.!
